Hippari & Shakotan, or pulled/stretched tire and lowered car, with aggressive camber are a few of the more extreme wheel/suspension modifications that can be seen at car shows and parking lots in Japan.  The aim of these types of modification are not only to get the car as low as possible with the most negative camber and widest wheels, but to alter the overall look.

Shakotan means ‘Lowered Car’ or literally ‘Short Height Car.’  Japan, like any other country, also has its car enthusiasts who want to reduce their cars’ height to increase cornering performance or to just look good.  The origins of this style range back to the 1970s and lowering techniques range from big-dollar suspension set ups all the way down to haphazardly cutting springs for the desired height.

Hippari tire is one thing that goes hand in hand with such modifications, which literally means ‘pulled’ (or stretched) tires where a tire is mounted onto a wheel that is too wide for its usual fitment.  For the most extreme examples, Hippari tires are a necessity so the side wall of the tire misses the inside of the wheel arch and allows a lower ride height, often right down to the outer lip of the rim.  Drifters use them because the side wall gets stiffer as the tire is stretched which in turn reduces flex.
